Budapest
Lama Ole Nydahl first visited Budapest in October, 1988. After that, his first meditation center of Hungary was founded under the name Karma Dechen Ozel Ling (The Island of Radiant Light of Highest Joy). The first center was established in the flat of two Buddhists in Buday László street.

In January 2000, a significant event took place in Budapest: the 17th Karmapa Thaye Dorje gave teachings and initiations here for the first time. Five thousand people attended the four-day event.

In March 2001, after a long search, we bought a building with a courtyard which was formerly a beer factory in the center of Budapest. Thanks to the significant financial support of many practitioners, we were able to reach our goal of buying the property. Lama Ole inaugurated our center on 30th July 2001 to much fanfare.

This place had developed well, and is our current center. Although the center had functioned quite well for a decade, with a large gompa, beautiful dharmashop, and cafeteria, our Lama's vision went far and beyond. Therefore, in the summer of 2012, the 17th Karmapa broke the ground for our renovation work, and for the past couple of years, significant changes took place. The whole place was torn down and rebuilt, with the exception of the historical walls that face the street. At the moment it is the largest Diamond Way Buddhist City Center of Europe with a surface area of 3,600 m2 and usable area of 6,700 m2. Our long-term goal is to transform it into an international cultural and meditation center.  It now houses a 440 m2 modern gompa, a library, a dharma-shop, offices, a cafeteria, a statue-filling room, a multifunctional area and a residential area. The reconstruction was done with green energies in mind.

Because of its size and location, it also fulfills the role of an international center for the central European, eastern European, and Balkan regions. In addition, it supports groups in Transylvania, Trans-Carpathian, Slovak centers near the border, Slovenia, Serbia, and Bulgaria.

We would like to share and show our activity and we also enjoy the international buzz, so we are very happy you are coming!
